Guðrún Ingibjörg Jakobsdóttir was born in Manitoba on October 30, 1891.

Guðrún’s parents were Jakob Hansson Líndal and Anna Hannesdóttir. Jón was the son of Magnús Guðmundsson and Þuríður Jónasardóttir in Mýrasýsla. He came with them to New York, eight months old at the beginning of summer in 1887. His father died there on August 2 of that year and his mother was then sent back to Iceland with her children. Jón grew up in Mýrasýsla and in Reykjavík, where he studied carpentry. In 1913 he and his mother went west to Winnipeg where they stayed until 1916, then moved west to Seattle.
