Guðrún came west to Winnipeg in 1903 with her parents, Jón Jónsson and Guðrún Sveinbjörnsdóttir. They took land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1907. Pétur grew up in the Garðar Settlement in the home of his parents, Hallgrímur Thorlacius and María Sigfúsdóttir Bergman. Pétur moved to the Lakes Settlement in 1906 and married there.
