Jón and Guðrún came west in 1889 on the same ship and moved to Winnipeg. Jón worked for a time in Mountain, N. Dakota, but in 1893 they settled in Roseau County in Minnesota, with the first Icelandic pioneers in the area. Jón took land in Pohlitz Township and began farming. They lived there the rest of their lives.
