Guðrún Pálsdóttir was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla on April 14, 1863. She died in Manitoba on April 8, 1937.

Guðrún came west to New Iceland in 1876 with her parents, Páll Pétursson and Margrét Magnúsdóttir. Jóhann sailed west the same year and settled in the Fljóts Settlement. He was heavily involved in the early years of New Iceland, undertook important tasks for the colonial government, and wrote extensively for Framfari. Jóhann and Guðrún lived there the longest, but actually moved from New Iceland in 1892 and settled in the Argyle Settlement. The stay there was not long because they moved from there a year later back to the Fljóts Settlement.
