Helgi was the son of Jón Guðnason, who took the name Stevens in the west and Jóhanna Stefanía Hansdóttir, pioneer settlers in New Iceland. Jón was a ship’s captain of the lake for many years, so it is no wonder that Helgi also became a captain. Guðrún was the daughter of Guðmundur Þorvaldsson and Rósa Sigríður Jónsdóttir, Káin’s sister. Helgi and Guðrún lived the longest in Gimli but also in Selkirk.
