Guðrún Sigríður Jónasdóttir was born in the Geysir settlement in New Iceland on October 1, 1893.

Guðrún was the daughter of Jónas Þorsteinsson and Lilja Friðfinnsdóttir, early settlers in the Geysir settlement in Manitoba in 1883. There she completed her primary school education and decided to work as a nurse. She participated in the women’s association and in church committees.
