Jón came west in 1883 to Winnipeg but Guðrún was studying in Copenhagen where she learned to cook. She went west in 1889 to Jón in Hensel, N. Dakota where his parents, Guðmundur Gíslason and Sigríður Símonardóttir lived. Jón and Guðrún bought land in the Geysir settlement in 1902 but never lived there. Instead, they lived at Hvammur where Jón’s parents lived.
