Pétur came west with his parents, Sigurður Jakobsson and Sigríður Teitsdóttir, to Ontario, Canada in 1873 and they lived in Collingwood out by Georgian Bay. They moved from there to New Iceland in 1875 and lived there until 1879 when they moved to N. Dakota.
