Guðrún was the daughter of Oddur Árnason of S. Þingeyjarsýsla and his wife, Guðlaugur Björg Gísladóttir from Njarðvík, N. Múlasýsla. They lived in Gimli. Bjarni was the son of Egill Egilsson and Guðveig Jónsdóttir in Gimli. At a young age, he became very interested in town affairs, especially matters concerning the younger generations. He sat on the town council and became mayor in 1941. In the following years, Gimli changed from a village to a town and became the capital of Icelanders in Manitoba.
