Gunnar emigrated to America with his mother, Kristín Benjamínsdóttir in 1876. They arrived in Duluth in Minnesota and from there to the Minneota area. Ingibjörg emigrated from Iceland with her parents in 1883. They settled in the Thingvalla settlement west of Manitoba. After her mother’s passing in 1890, the family moved to Winnipeg and lived there.  Gunnar was the newspaper editor of the “Minneota Mascot”. The family later moved to St. Paul, where he served as the Honorary Icelandic Consul in Minneapolis.
