Gunnar grew up in youth centers, attended Hvítárbakkáskóli in 1917-18, but came to the West in the fall of 1920. He went to Winnipeg and immediately began studying music there, studying piano with Jón Pálsson there in 1920-26. He sailed from America to Denmark and continued his piano studies, now with Harald Sigurðsson 1927-29. He returned to Canada and started a music career there. See Employment (Atvinna) below. María was the daughter of Jón Halldórsson and Anna Sigurðardóttir in Winnipeg.
