Gunnar Gíslason came west in 1883 with his parents, Gísli Jónsson and Jarðþrúður Halldórsdóttir, who took land in the Akra Settlement. There Gunnar grew up and moved with his parents and Halldór, his brother, to Roseau County, Minnesota. He was a farmer there for 9 years but in 1904, he moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan and took land near Elfros. Anna was the daughter of Bjarni Stefánsson and Elín Eiríksdóttir who lived in the Þingvalla Settlement in Saskatchewan.
