Gunnbjörn Ingvar Stefánsson was born in Víðidalur in Húnavatnssýsla on September 29, 1886.

Gunnbjörn chose the educational path and completed his secondary education degree in 1909. He then attended a teacher’s course in Reykjavík in 1910 and began his teaching career the same year. He was a teacher at Rangárvellir until 1913, but then began preparations to go west. He came west in 1914 to Winnipeg and stayed there and also from time to time in N. Dakota until 1916. From there he went west to Saskatchewan where he became a farmer. In the years 1930-40, Winnipeg grew rapidly, and Gunnbjörn then worked in carpentry in that city. He then moved west to the Pacific Ocean and settled in Salmon Arm where he grew fruit until 1946. He settled in Vancouver in 1947. He always took an active part in the social affairs of his countrymen both in Winnipeg and in Vancouver. He wrote articles in the western Icelandic weekly and also published his own poetry there.
