Gunnlaugur came west in 1892 with his parents, Árni Sigurðsson and Kristjana S. Stefánsdóttir. They settled in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota but then moved to the Brown Settlement in Manitoba in 1899 and there Gunnlaugur took land. He lived there until 1910, then sold his land and moved west to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. Jóhanna Sigríður was born in Manitoba, the daughter of Þórður Þorsteinsson, a farmer in Argyle, and his wife Elísabet. Guðný was the daughter of Jón Magnússon and Kristín Hannesardóttir in Árnessýsla. She came west after 1910.
