Gunnlaugur Bjarni Eggertsson was born in the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota on June 10, 1887.  He had the name G. B. Gunlogson in the west.

Gunnlaugur’s parents, Eggert Gunnlaugsson and Rannveig Rögnvaldsdóttir, took land in Akra and he grew up in their home. He chose to get higher education and enrolled in Grand Forks State University. He worked for the J. I. Case machinery company for a long time and made various discoveries that greatly improved the work of farmers. He was a great nature lover and conservationist. He donated his land in the Akra Settlement to the state, where the Icelandic State Park regional museum is located today.
