Gunnlaugur emigrated west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1905, a year before his parents, Haraldur Sigurðsson Hólm and Helga Gunnlaugsdóttir. Svanfríður was the daughter of Jakob Sigurgeirsson from Grund in Eyjafjordur who came west in 1888 and died in Mikley on August 1, 1937.
Gunnlaugur went with his parents to the Víðir-Sandy Hills Settlement in 1905 and farmed there until 1946. They went west and lived in Stevenson, British Columbia for a few years, spent some time in Vancouver, and ended in the Betel care home in Gimli in the fall of 1963.
