Gunnlaugur emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1885 with his mother and brothers. With them was Jóhanna Helga, a maid to Gunnlaug’s mother. They settled in the Árnes Settlement where Gunnlaugur took land, calling it Jaðar.
