Gunnlaugur came west to Canada in 1887 and went to Brandon, Manitoba. He stayed there all year and went from there to Winnipeg. His stay there was short, he went west to the Pacific Ocean and was in Vancouver for a while. In 1889 he went east to Calgary and a year later to the Icelandic settlement by Markerville and settled on land south of the village. He built a house there and lived there for the next three years. Then he left the settlement and settled in Calgary where he remained until 1902. The drama around a search for a home continued because he now moved west to Ballard, Washington but did not find himself there, he returned again to Calgary in 1904 and lived there until 1908. This 20-year search ended with him taking land near the town of Red Deer, building a house there, and living thereafter. There are no stories about Margrét in the west or having children.
