Gunnlaugur Tryggvason was born at Langanes in N. Þingeyjarsýsla on November 14, 1880. He died in Fargo, N. Dakota on July 14, 1964. He took the last name Johnson in the west.

Gunnlaugur was the son of Tryggvi Jónsson and his first wife, María Gunnlaugsdóttir who died in Iceland on June 1, 1889. Gunnlaugur came to the West in 1893 with his father and his second wife, Rósa I Jónsdóttir. He was a farmer in N. Dakota. Viktoría was the daughter of Jón Vernharðsson and Finnbjörg Finnsdóttir who came west in 1893.
