Gunnlaugur was the son of Tryggvi Jónsson and his first wife, María Gunnlaugsdóttir who died in Iceland on June 1, 1889. Gunnlaugur came to the West in 1893 with his father and his second wife, Rósa I Jónsdóttir. He was a farmer in N. Dakota. Viktoría was the daughter of Jón Vernharðsson and Finnbjörg Finnsdóttir who came west in 1893.
