Gunnsteinn Eyjólfsson was born on April 1, 1866 in N. Múlasýsla. He died in Minnesota on March 3, 1910.

Gunsteinn emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba with his parents, Eyjólfur Magnusson and Vilborg Jónsdóttir, and siblings in 1876. They settled in the Icelandic River Settlement in New Iceland and Gunnsteinn lived there the rest of his life. Similarly, Guðfinna came west with her parents, Eiríkur Sigurðsson and Ingunn Bjarnadóttir, in the same year. They also settled in New Iceland.
