Gustaf Runeberg Kristjánsson was born in Wynyard, Saskatchewan on August 14, 1917. He took his last name in the west from his paternal grandfather, Kristjánsson.

Gustaf’s parents were Hákon Jónasson from Hraunkot in S. Þingeyjarsýsla and Guðný Sólmundsdóttir of Mikley, Manitoba. He graduated from the University of Saskatoon with a teaching degree in 1940, joined the Royal Canadian Navy in 1941, and served until the end of World War II. He went on to graduate school in Toronto, Ontario, specializing in radio drama. He worked at CBC Radio in Winnipeg.
