Gyðríður Gísladóttir was born in Ísafjarðarsýsla on May 29, 1891.

Gyðríður came west in 1891 with her parents, Gísli Árnason and Margrét Sigurðardóttir. Jakob came to the West with his parents in 1898. Once there, he immediately headed west to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan, where his sister, Steinunn, lived with her husband and children near Foam Lake. Jakob worked the first year at butter making in Churchbridge and then at agriculture in the countryside near Foam Lake. He took land there in 1905 and farmed until 1919. From there he moved to land near Wynyard where he continued farming until 1956. He then returned to Foam Lake where he lived for the rest of his life.
