They emigrated to New Iceland in 1876 and spent the first winter with Páll Jóhannsson at Víkingavatn. In the spring, Halfdán bought land north of Sandy Bar and called his farm Skógur and lived there five years. He then moved to the Icelandic River Settlement and bought the farm named Bjarkárvöllum.
