Jóhannes came west to New Iceland 1876, with his mother, Guðný Einarsdóttir, and younger sister, Jóna. Halla, a maid, was in this same group, and later became Jóhannes’ wife. They lived the first winter in the Árnes Settlement. Jóhannes settled on his own land in the same settlement a year later. Newly married, they moved to Mikley, but moved from there two years later due to flooding and settled in the Fljóts Settlement. Next, they moved to Winnipeg, where they lived for two years. Life’s road led them again to the Fljóts Settlement in 1885 where they lived on the land named Jaðar for many years. When Jóhannes died, Halla lived there for nine more years, but moved from there to Víðir.
