Halldór was the son of Ólaf Árnason and Ragnheiður Ósk Sigurðardóttir who came west in 1887. He went with them to the Brown Settlement in Manitoba in 1899 and there he grew up. He joined the Canadian Army in 1918 and was sent to England. He returned a year later and bought land in the Brown Settlement. In 1924, he quit farming and moved to Chicago where he worked for the Ford Motor Company until 1927. He came back to his land and lived there the rest of his life. Kristbjörg was the daughter of Árni Helgason and his wife.
