Halldór came west to Minnesota in 12879 with his parents, Björn Gíslason and Aðalbjörg Jónsdóttur, and his siblings. They settled in Lyon County and that is where Halldór grew up. Like his brothers, Halldór pursued his education, became a professor at the University of Minnesota, and for a time the head of department there. (See Icelandic heritage below)
