Ingibjörg Bjarnadóttir, Hallgrímur’s mother, travelled with them to Canada where another son, Sigurður, had emigrated in 1888. Hallgrímur became ill with tuberculosis in Winnipeg. They placed their children in foster care and sailed home to Iceland.
