Hallgrímur and Herdís emigrated west in 1873 with their three youngest children. They traveled south to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and were one of the first Icelandic settlers in Shawano County in Wisconsin. In 1880 they moved to N. Dakota and bought land in the Garðar Settlement. Living with them were Guðfinna Jónsdóttir of Mjóadal and Aðalbjörg Indriðadóttir of Fnjóskadal who had emigrated west the family in 1873.
