Hallur Ólafsson was born in Rangárvallasýsla on August 16, 1853. He died in Palo Alto, California on March 27, 1937.

They came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1903 and moved from there north of Lake Manitoba and took land on the Bluff peninsula. They lived there for 4 years but then stopped farming. It is said that Hallur returned home to Iceland in the spring of 1908, but in the fall returned to Manitoba and settled on land in Moose Horn Bay. His son Björn later took up land there as well, but Ólafur had worked in retail in Akureyri and was a shopkeeper in Eriksdale for a long time.
