Hannes came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1889 and moved onward to his brother Halldór in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. He moved to Winnipegosis, Manitoba shortly after the turn of the century and was there until 1906, when on July 3, they moved to land in the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. They lived in the Wynyard area.
