Hannes’ rail journey ended in Sheho, and from there he headed for Foam Lake, where he received advice from the State Ombudsman. Finally, he made his way to Wynyard and took land north of there.
Hannes was the son of Skúli Árnason and Sigríður Erlendsdóttir, pioneers living at Bræðraborg in New Iceland in 1876. There Hannes was born and moved with his parent in 1881 to the Argyle Settlement where they took land just south of Cypress River. Hannes grew up there, but in 1904, when there was almost no land available in the settlement, Hannes decided to look elsewhere. He took a train from Winnipeg to Yorkton, Saskatchewan and from there to the terminus in Sheho, northwest of Yorkton. From there, he continued until he found the land agent who instructed the settlers and recorded their properties. Hannes got a ride with a supply team until he arrived north of where the town of Wynyard is today. There he found a respectable place and was one of the first Icelanders to survey the land there. He returned, recorded his land with the agent, and then took a train back to Winnipeg. The following spring (1905) he went back north to his property with a friend and together they built a log cabin there. In 1908, transportation was much improved and the newlyweds, Margrét and Hannes, went to the future home. They later moved to Wynyard, where they lived for the last few years.
