Helga was the daughter of Bjarni Pétursson and Valgerður Sigurðardóttir, early homesteaders in Mikley and in Mountain, N. Dakota. Sigurður came west to N. Dakota with his parents in 1883. They took land near Svold. Sigurður moved to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1905 and took land near the town of Elfros. They later moved and lived in Elfros.
