Helga was taken in as a foster child of the couple Helgi Jóhannesson and Þórunn Ólafsdóttir, settlers in Garðar, N. Dakota. Growing up, she got to know Arngrímur Arngrímsson’s family well in Garðar, and those acquaintances led to her being hired in a canteen in 1916 for a threshing job with Jón Arngrímsson in Vatnabyggð, Sask. Jón’s brother, Sigbjörn, worked there then and one thing led to another. Sigbjörn settled on his land north of Mozart, Saskatchewan on October 28, 1905. His brothers, Stefán, Sigurður and Jón accompanied him and all settled there. Their mother, Þorbjörg Magnúsdóttir, moved there a year later with her daughter Soffía.
