Jón Helgi Bjarnason was born in Húnavatnssýsla on July 6, 1887. He died in Vancouver on May 27, 1977. He was known as Jón Pálmason in the west.

Jón came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1887 with his parents, Bjarni Pálmason and Anna Eiríksdóttir, and siblings. Jón was about a month old when the family started west, but both he and his mother fell ill on the trip and she could not care for the boy. Another woman in the group with a newborn baby came to the rescue and nursed both Jón and Anna back to health. He grew up in New Iceland and lived in Riverton for a long time.
