They came west to Canada in 1881 and then to Elk Rapids, Michigan. Guðbjörg joined them there a year later. They moved west to the Akra Settlement in N. Dakota but due to lack of land and number of settlers in the settlement, Helgi chose to look further west and explore the lands in the Mouse River Settlement. There he found land and they lived there ever after.
