Helgi Jóhannsson was born in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland on March 6, 1896. He was known as Helgi J Jóhannesson in the west.

Helgi was the son of Jóhann Jóhannesson and Sigríður Stefánsdóttir, who came west in 1887 and settled in the Árnes settlement in New Iceland. It was called Fagribakki and they lived there all their lives. María’s parents were Jón Björnsson Snæfeld and Sigurrós Markúsdóttir, who lived in Breiðumýri in the Hnausa settlement. Helgi fished in Lake Winnipeg and ran a fish shop in the Árnes settlement. He later lived in Gimli.
