Helgi Jónsson was born in the Ísafold settlement in New Iceland on July 3, 1897. H had the last name Hornfjörð or Hornford in the west.
Spouse: June 14, 1924 Laufey Hansína Jónasdóttir b. May 6, 1898 in Winnipeg.
Children: 1. Harold Þorsteinn b. July 13, 1925 2. Herbert Earl b. February 10, 1929 3. Helgi b. September 23, 1932.
Helgi’s parents, Jón Jónsson Hornfjörð and Guðleif Árnadóttir, lived in New Iceland, first in the Ísafold settlement but moved in 1901 to the Framnes settlement. They moved to the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan in 1922. There Helgi fished but then turned to business and worked in retail. Later he started farming near Elfros where he sat on the school board and worked in the farmers’ cooperatives in the area.
