Helgi Pétursson was born in S. Þingeyjarsýsla on January 21, 1876. He took the last name Steinberg in the west.

Helgi came west with his wife and little Ingimar in 1910 to Foam Lake in the Lakes settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. He farmed there until 1942, then moved west to the Pacific and settled in White Rock, British Columbia. He was always involved in the activities of the Icelandic National League in the West.
