Helgi came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1883 and then went to the Pembina Hills in N. Dakota where his fiancee, Guðlaug Guðmundsdóttir, was living. She had come west with her brother Guðmundur and mother Jarðþrúður Jónsdóttir. Her brother, and Jarðþrúður’s son, Stefán Guðmundsson was already settled there. Helgi took land in the Akra Settlement and lived there the rest of his life.
