Herdís came west alone in 1901 and settled in Winnipeg. Gestur was the son of Sigurgeir Stefánsson of Eyjafjörður and his wife, Sesselja Friðfinnsdóttir who came west in 1882 and lived a long time in Selkirk, Manitoba. Gestur came to Manitoba in 1889. After they were married, they moved west to Blaine, Washington.
