Hallgrímur and Herdís came west in 1873 with their three youngest children. They first moved south to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and were among the first settlers in the Icelandic community in Shawano, Wisconsin. They moved from there in 1880 to N. Dakota and took land in the Garðar Settlement. Living with them were Guðfinna Jónsdóttir of Mjóadal and Aðalbjörg Indriðadóttir of Fnjóskadal who, like the family, came west in 1873.
