Hermann was the son of Jón Sigurðsson and Pálína Þórðardóttir who came west in 1888. He grew up in their home in Narrows, Manitoba and moved with them to Eriksdale in 1910. He was a carpenter and a mechanic. The family moved to Churchbridge, Saskatchewan in 1916. There he met Helga, the daughter of Eiríkur Bjarnason and his wife Oddný Magnúsdóttir, who came west in 1888.
