Hjálmar Gunnarsson was born in Skagafjarðarsýsla in 1892.
Unmarried and childless.
He came west to Manitoba in 1900 with his parents, Gunnar Guðmundsson and Veronika Eiríksdóttir, and siblings. He grew up in their home in the Árdals Settlement. He joined the Canadian Army and was sent to Europe. He returned to Canada and lived for a time in Alberta but moved from there to Montana in the United States. There he died in a plane crash.
