Hjálmar Valdimar Pálmason was born in New Iceland on October 12, 1912. He died in Winnipeg on January 18, 1980. He was known as Lárusson or Valdi Lár in the west.

Hjálmar was the son of Pálmi Lárusson and Guðrún Steinsdóttir who came west from Húnavatnssýsla in 1893. He grew up in Gimli where his father was a fisherman. Valdi went on to study education, became a teacher in various places in Manitoba, and finally taught in the Icelandic Department of the University of Manitoba.
