Hjálmur Frímann Daníelsson was born in Snæfellsnessýsla on Ooctober 12, 1882.

Hjálmur came to the West in 1894 with his parents, Daníel Sigurðsson and Kristjana Jörundsdóttir, and siblings. They settled in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) in Manitoba. Hólmfríður was the daughter of Ólafur Ólafsson and Ragnheiður Sigurrós Bjarnadóttir who came west in 1900. Hjálmur began studying agriculture in 1909 at the Department of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. He graduated from there in 1915 and was appointed an agricultural recruiter in the Interlake of Manitoba, based in Arborg. Hólmfríður’s parents lived there and from there she graduated from high school and graduated as a teacher. They were both very interested in their Icelandic origins and took an active part in the diverse social work of Icelanders both in New Iceland and in Winnipeg.
