Hólmfred Freeman Sigurbjörnsson was born in the Hnausa Settlement on May 1, 1894. He died in the settlement in 1962. He had the name Holmfred Freeman Benedictson in the west.

Hólmfred was the son of Sigurbjörn Benediktsson and Kristveig Jónsdóttir in the Shoal Lake Settlement (Grunnavatnsbyggð) while Ásta’s parents were Finnbogi Þorgilsson and Málfríður Jónsdóttir, pioneer settlers in the Shoal Lake Settlement in 1886. Hólmfred and Ásta were farmers in Otto in the settlement.
