Hólmfríður came west to Winnipeg in 1911, where her brother Gunnlaugur had moved a few years earlier. Friðrik came west to Winnipeg in 1906 and, in company with his brother Aðalstein who had gone west some time before, embarked on a major construction project in the city. The brothers worked together for several years.
