Ingibjörg was the daughter or Benedikt Jóhannesson and Ásta Sæmundsdóttir who lived in the Garðar Settlement in N. Dakota. Ingibjörg grew up there, in 1920 she moved with her sister, Jónína Snjólaug, and brother-in-law, Jósef Jóhannesson to the Lakes Settlement (Vatnabyggð) in Saskatchewan. The sisters were always very close and worked hard together. They were both active in the women’s club Liljan. When Jónína’s husband passed away, they moved to Winnipeg in 1943 and lived there with Valgerður, Jónína’s daughter.
