Grímur came west to Milwaukee, Wisconsin along with his parents and siblings. His father, Þórður Árnason, died two months after arriving there. His mother, Guðrún Grímsdóttir, then went to live with a Norwegian farmer in Dane County near Madison, Wisconsin. They lived there until 1876 but then moved to the Icelandic community in Shawano County and lived there until 1880. They moved to the Garðar settlement in N. Dakota. Ingibjörg came west to Winnipeg, Manitoba with her parents in 1883.
