Ísleifur emigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1885 with his mother and brothers. They settled in the Framnes Settlement in New Iceland. Oddfríður was a widow when she came west in 1887 with her daughter Guðríður Guðmundsdóttir. She became Ísleifur’s housekeeper in 1894 and they lived together on his land named Brautarholt.
